With Increased Demand, Some Charities Face Difficult Hoidays

With demand up and donations shrinking, charities face a difficult time of year. Many are short on volunteers and could use your help. If you have only a few minutes or a few hours, you can make a difference.

The numbers are dishearteningly grim, with a national jobless rate of 10 percent, cutbacks in social service spending by many states, and 49 million Americans lacking access to adequate nutrition — the highest level of "food insecurity" since the Agriculture Department began tracking it in 1995.
