Community service as a TV theme

More than 100 programs on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and cable networks will spotlight the idea of giving back, through story lines or public service announcements.

Discerning television viewers may notice a recurrent theme on their favorite shows this week. The doctors on ABC's "Private Practice" give homeless teenagers free checkups. On NBC's "30 Rock," page Kenneth Parcell tries to adopt all the dogs at an animal shelter. And two characters on CBS' "Numb3rs" talk about joining Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Young Adult Novels that Promote Volunteerism and Service

I'm thrilled to see this push toward volunteerism and service in the media. I'm doing a similar campaign of promoting volunteerism through my series of young adult fantasy novels. Glad to see to many new folks are wanting to "participate" in what millions of us have already been doing for decades. . . I agree and have fully supported volunteering, along with lots of my friends and family, but it's not an "Obama" thing. It's an American thing.
